The Highway 61 ~ Blog!

“FREE is a promise for all individuals to experience personal freedom to live life to their fullest potential, and a promise of a free world where people are loved for who they are and not condescended for who they are not”

This is what FREE, an NGO started by youngsters from Pune believe in.

When Highway 61 was approached by FREE to do a fundraiser for them so that they can get registered legally, H61 readily agreed.

After meeting with these enthusiastic bunch of free thinkers, Highway 61 was much impressed with their  ambition and the vision.

“FREE as an organization works within the framework of gender and sexuality which is a very broad context and includes issues like child sexual abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, rights & issues of the LGBT community/commercial sex workers, sex education, peer pressure, substance abuse, etc.

Our effort is aimed at not curing these issues that ail society but a long term attempt to remove these evils altogether.”

A very noble thought. They help people who live in areas where most of us wouldn’t dare to step in!

You will be surprised as to the number of youngsters involved in social work these days.  For example, we met Apoorva Joshi, one of the supporters of FREE at the fundraiser, who runs  her own NGO called Wild on Wheels (WoW) which is involved with wildlife conservation and lot more!

The fundraiser was held at OPUS, ABC farms, Koregoan Park, Pune.

A good number of people turned up for the event and FREE was able to raise a decent amount of funds.

They plan to do more fundraising concerts in the future & also an art exhibition which will help them raise more funds.

Highway 61 was glad it could help FREE do the brilliant job they are doing.

This is a vibrant song which urges people to stand up and take a step towards change.   

 Starting out as an attempt at writing for a voting campaign, our attempt resulted in a song to which the youth of today can relate.  

 As usual, Muneem came up with the lyrics and two chords. He then sits with Hardik and Arjun outside the eating joint where H61 first met. 

 Hardik adds two more chords and a melody is created within half an hour! 

 Everyone drops in at Anant’s place that evening, Jatin creates a solo in 10 mins, Arjun adds the rhythm and Rahul the backing vocals – and there, we had a new song ! 

 A short song with a valuable message – Take a stand, Make a choice, Vote!  Not just for a political party or the government or because it’s your duty, but vote for the things you love, value and cherish!
